The forests

The MRC of Coaticook covers a surface area of 1,332.26 km2. Nearly 1,000 producers share a forested area of 733.3 km2, three of which being large scale producers representing 7% of the forested landscape. This comes back to the point that 55% of the MRC’s terrain is forested. The composition of the region’s forests is distinguished by its very diversified qualities.

Several species of trees grow within the territory. Various balsams, pines, larches, cedars, birches, ashes, cherry trees and of course maples can all be found in the area. Speaking of the maples, it is interesting to note that the MRC includes 107 maple syrup operations, that, when combined, total 283,000 taps. On average, each maple producer owns about 2,600 taps, which represents about 6% of all taps in the townships. The forest resource guide notes that more than a third of the forests are composed entirely of deciduous trees, followed by another third of mixed deciduous and evergreen and finally the last third of coniferous and reforesting areas.

All the forests located within the MRC are private. Despite the lack of public forests within the MRC, it is important to recall that the forests bring great benefits to the local economy. Everyone from the forest worker to the land owner to the company that uses wood as primary material benefits from this precious resource.
